Exciting Gallery News..
New Ceramist
We have our first ceramicist, Mary Wyatt. An East Anglian potter, Mary creates stunning wildlife pieces in Raku. Raku is a type of Japanese hand-modelled pottery that is fired at a low temperature and then moved while hot to a closed container with combustible materials (such as paper or sawdust) that ignite and cause a reaction creating colours and patterns in the pottery's surface.
Mary's work features beautiful iridescent glazes, crackle glazes and lots of texture and fine detailing. Simply stunning! Please visit the gallery to view her available work or check out the Mary Wyatt ceramics.
A Cast of Crustaceans!
Look at what walked up from the beach to the gallery... crabs! We have a stunning collection of these very eye-catching crab sculptures by Martyn Dempsey. Our gallery window is full of gold ones, black ones, verdigris ones... in a variety of sizes from mini to very large indeed!
Martyn’s sculptures are steeped in history, crafted using a method dating back to 3000 BC. He combines recycled copper and zinc, remnants of ships and coins given new life, forming a molten alloy heated to scorching temperatures. This liquid metal is then poured into meticulously prepared sandcast moulds, where it cools and solidifies. Each piece undergoes a meticulous hand-finishing process, where he applies patinas to create a unique finish. This personalized touch ensures every sculpture possesses its own captivating character.
Visit us in the gallery to view the full range. They are selling very quickly but we have some more arriving soon and will add the range to the website very soon.
Mitchell House Sculptures in the Gallery
Mitchell House is a traditionally trained sculptor with work exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and public places.
He works mainly in iron, bronze and cold cast bronze, though has completed many commissions in other media.
With his figurative sculpture, Mitchell aims to capture the stillness that is caught within the blink of an eye that activates the emotional pathways of the souls. His great love is the grace and movement of the human figure, particularly the female form.
We have a number of Mitchell House sculptures in solid bronze and cold cast bronze sculptures at the gallery.
Susan Ashby Sculptures in the Gallery
We are thrilled to be the gallery to launch the new limited edition sculpture range from Susan Ashby. Susan's beautiful female figures grace our gallery and lend a touch of elegance.
Susan finds inspiration from people-watching and translating her sketches into three-dimensional form in wax or clay. Her sculptures combine fluid movement with great poise and she often accents her work with bronze and verdigris patinas.
Her ‘Sassy Dancer’ and ‘Dipping her Toes’ are proving very popular and the editions are selling fast. We have the full range at the gallery in a variety of finishes. Susan is currently working on a ballerina sculpture, which will be in the gallery this Summer. See all Susan Ashby sculptures online.
Sculpture Courses
Mitchell and Susan also run sculpture classes from their studio near Holt in the heart of North Norfolk. These are beginners to advanced courses in sculpture using traditional and classical approaches.
The beginners course is recommended as a starting point as the teaching relates to traditional techniques rarely taught nowadays. Working from a model, students will learn the basics of anatomy and how to correctly measure proportions and apply them to their portrait bust. Once the clay piece is completed, the student then learns how to take a mould and then cast the sculpture into plaster.
The aim of the courses is to enable students to advance their skills and confidence so they may create sculpture independently for personal enjoyment or for selling.
For course availability, please call Susan on 07917 826585 and click here for further information.
On The Easel…
Michael Sanders is working on a new large-scale canvas mixed-media painting of three Spitfires. The photo below shows the progress so far.
The composition is simply stunning, with the aircraft flying towards the viewer and set against an atmospheric sky with shafts of light and a real sense of height above the clouds. This painting will be in the gallery next month along with a range of Michael Sanders canvas prints, and Michael Sanders prints, as well as Michael Sanders paintings including various other spitfire designs.
