Richard Baker Artist Bio

Born in Norwich in 1981, Richard Baker has been driven by creativity since childhood. His early fascination with natural forms led him to study Textiles at Norwich University of the Arts, specialising in surface pattern design. Working with repeat patterns inspired by leaves, stones, feathers and other found objects, he exhibited at New Designers in London in 2002, where his work was purchased by an international collector. He went on to freelance for several global fashion companies, creating designs for womenswear.

Richard later returned to his love of natural objects, transforming them into contemporary digital canvas artworks that celebrated texture, form and organic detail. After some travelling and taking time to explore new ideas, he discovered resin - a medium that allowed him to combine colour, movement and depth in a way that felt instinctive.

Dedicated to craftsmanship, Richard works on high-quality birch plywood artist panels. He welcomes commissions of any size in both rectangular and circular formats.

His process blends structure with unpredictability. Textured base layers of paste and sand create the foundation, while alcohol inks are blown across the surface forming organic shapes, cellular patterns and delicate lacing. Mica powders add luminosity, and in his coastal pieces, white resin is used to evoke sea foam washing ashore. Every artwork is finished with a clear resin top coat, sealing and protecting the layers beneath while enhancing their depth and movement.

Richard’s work is defined by its sense of flow, its tactile surfaces, and its connection to the natural world - a continuation of the curiosity that first inspired him to create.
