Jo Arnold Artist Bio

Rather than using clay to express already formed ideas, I make things to find out what matters to me.
Themes arise from the clay and the making process.
I started making clay garments, which also became buildings, shelters, refuges for homeless wanderers and more recently abandoned places of worship and ritual.
Structures and their impermanence are important. I live among the beautiful fields and coastline of North Norfolk, but what draws my eye might be an abandoned farm shed, ruined church or obsolete industry seen from a train window.

I work in stoneware clay, usually grogged, sometimes mixed with other material. I build by coiling, slabbing, stretching and tearing. I make casts from found objects that might be classed as rubbish and use them to build with. I use lettering and textures in the same way.
I grew up on the heavy soil of Hampshire and dug clay out of the garden – I’ve been making things in clay ever since.
